In the music scene this island off of Manhattan is probably most well known for the Governor's Ball Music Festival. But there is so much more to Governor's Island than just music.
Not that ferries to Governor's Island are expensive (at $2) but if you don't mind getting up a little bit earlier you can catch a free ferry before 11:30am. Just remember the ferry leaves from the Maritime Building in Manhattan - which is not the same building as the Staten Island ferry which many people mistake! For all the Brooklynites there is also a ferry conveniently located at Pier 6 in Brooklyn.
Once you 'land' on the island you soon realize how much of a little paradise is is. It's the perfect getaway (or staycation) from the city.
It was my first time out to Governor's Island and I can easily say I need to go back - which partly has to do with the fact I only had a limited amount of time there. But even with a tight schedule my friends and I were able to grab ice cream, enjoy a bike ride around the island (on the cutest Surrey Bike ever) and get some food stand/truck food.
I am a huge history buff so the next time I head on over discovering Governor's Island's past and mini golf will be on the agenda!
